My External Hard Drive is Freezing File Explorer, Help!

I've been using my external hard drive without problems, but out of nowhere, it started causing File Explorer to freeze when I plug it in. It doesn't freeze immediately; it happens when I'm trying to open folders on the drive or even when I'm just navigating through my C drive. I've got some really important files on this drive, and I'm quite worried about what's happening. I want to avoid making the issue worse, but what should I do?

It sounds like your hard drive might be failing. They do have a limited lifespan, and it can be sudden. If you haven't backed up your files yet, you really should try to do that as soon as possible. It might help to try connecting it to another computer to see if the same issue occurs.

I get that this is stressful! If you’re able to see files at the root but can’t open them, you might want to use data recovery software or, if possible, connect the drive to a different operating system to access your files without causing freezes. Hope you can get everything sorted!

Have you checked the cable? Sometimes a faulty cable can cause issues like that. If your cable is bent or damaged, it might not be establishing a good connection. Try using a different cable and see if the freezing still happens.
