Why Can’t I Get My New Network Card to Run at Gigabit Speed?

Asked By CuriousCat123 On

I recently purchased a new network card since my motherboard only supports 100 Mbps, but I bought a gigabit card that supports up to 1000 Mbps. I'm trying to switch to gigabit speed, but despite my efforts, it still shows 100 Mbps in the settings. I attempted to use the terminal with 'sudo nm-connection-editor' to make the change, but it hasn't worked. I've also tried downloading the drivers from various sources. I'm using Zorin OS and really need some help!

It might help if you share the exact model of your network card to get more tailored advice. Sometimes specific drivers or settings can make a big difference depending on the hardware.

I have a KP-T90B model with a Realtek chipset (RTL8111C).

It sounds like the Ethernet cable could be the issue. If the cable is missing some pins or is damaged, it might not support gigabit speeds. I recommend checking with another device that has known working gigabit support.

Have you checked if you're using a gigabit-capable Ethernet cable? You'll need at least a Cat5e cable—Cat6 is even better. Also, make sure it's plugged into a gigabit switch port and not the motherboard directly. That could make a difference!
