I currently have an i5 6600 and I've just purchased a GTX 1080. What would be the best CPU upgrade for me?

The best upgrade option on your current motherboard would be the i7-6700K or the i7-7700K. However, keep in mind that this platform is quite old at over 10 years, so it's probably not worth sinking more money into it. Instead, I suggest considering a Ryzen-based setup on an AM4 platform. If you're on a budget, a Ryzen 5 3600 paired with a B550 motherboard would be a good choice. Alternatively, if you're looking to stick with Intel, an i5-12400F on an LGA 1700 motherboard like the B660 or B760 would also work well with DDR4 memory. You can definitely get more performance out of those options!

Yeah, but I think the original poster might be limited to DDR4 2133 or 2400, which could really hold back newer CPUs like the Ryzen 2 or 3 if that's the case.
