Is It Time to Upgrade My DDR4 14900k Build to a 9950X3D?

Hey folks! I've been using my 14900k build with tuned DDR4 B-Die RAM and a 4090 for about three years now, but I'm getting really frustrated with constant issues. I had to RMA my old 13900k due to major problems, and even with the new one, I still face crashes unless I undervolt the p-core. I suspect my DDR4 RAM might be a bottleneck as well. I'm considering switching to a 9950X3D DDR5 setup. Do you think this upgrade is worth it? I mostly game at 1440p and also do some video editing in Premiere Pro and Photoshop. I'm also aiming to grab a 5090 soon. What do you all think?

If you're into CPU-intensive games, you might see a 30-40% performance increase. Video editing gains won't be as noticeable—maybe around 10-15%. You'll have to weigh if that performance boost is worth over $1200 for the upgrade.

Honestly, right now isn't the best time to dive into a DDR5 build. If you have access to a Microcenter, that's a different story. But generally, you'll benefit from better efficiency and features like 3D v-cache. Just keep an eye on market prices, they can be pretty steep!

That's true! I just got a 40% coupon from Corsair due to a cancellation which might help with the cost. I'm really hoping for more stability with the new build.

I've owned both a 14900k with DDR5 and an AM5 x3d setup. Honestly, for 1440p, I don't think the upgrade is worth the cash right now. What motherboard and BIOS are you currently using?

I'm using an MSI MPG Z790 Edge WiFi with the latest BIOS. I've tried everything, and it keeps crashing unless I bring the p-core down to 53x or lower.

Absolutely, upgrading could really boost your performance. Just keep in mind, 32GB of RAM is usually enough for gaming and general use, but 64GB is fantastic for heavy editing work, though it is more expensive these days.
