I'm helping my mom convert her photos to JPG format before we store them on an SSD. Does anyone know of any good, free converters that would work well for this?

I recommend trying iMazing HEIC Converter. It's simple to use and free, plus it doesn't bombard you with ads.
Keep in mind that converting HEIC to JPG can lower the image quality. If you just need to view the images, maybe look for a good Windows extension that supports HEIC files instead of converting them.
If you're looking for a solid converter on Windows, check out Irfanview. It's free and handles HEIC files really well, especially with the right plugins. You can batch convert files too, which is super handy! Just remember to back up the original files first, just in case something goes wrong during the conversion.
