Is an AM4 Upgrade Viable on a Student Budget?

I'm currently using an old prebuilt PC that I upgraded with RAM a few years back, but it's stuck with DDR4. As a student, my budget is pretty tight, so I can't afford a full AM5 build, especially with RAM prices being high right now. I'm considering an AM4 motherboard to reuse my existing RAM and pair it with a low to mid-range graphics card. Has anyone done something similar or have recommendations? I'm looking to keep everything under $700-800 for a GPU, CPU, Motherboard, PSU, and Case.

You should be able to make an upgrade within that budget, especially if you consider used gear. Keep in mind the GPU’s price can take up a big chunk of your budget. eBay is a good place for finding second-hand parts, and I've had great luck with returns if something doesn’t work out. Definitely look there for options!

do you have any recommendations for GPUs or CPUs i should look at? I was thinking the Ryzen 5 5600 and maybe some cheap Radeon card. I'm not looking to really game too much, mainly video editing and workstation tasks.

AM4 is still a solid option. You might want to check out sites that sell used components like eBay or places where you can find second-hand deals. I’ve seen some decent motherboards and CPUs available at good prices. Also, you might find a GTX 3080 for around $300, which is a pretty good deal!
