Can I Leave My PC On During Short Power Outages with a UPS?

I'm experiencing frequent power outages in my room because of electrical limitations, especially when multiple appliances are used at once. Luckily, my brother can turn the power back on within 3-10 seconds after an outage. Given this context, I'm wondering if it's safe to keep my PC running during these short outages, especially since I may only lose wifi and get kicked from a game temporarily. Also, I'm in the process of finding a UPS for my setup with a 1000-watt PSU and a 5070ti. Are there specific features I should look for in a UPS, and is it really worth it to invest in a more expensive model?

Make sure your UPS matches your expected power load plus a little extra—about 10% more. Even with a 1000w PSU, you're probably using less than 600w, so a 700w UPS should suffice. I got a used APC for about $200, and it runs my rig beautifully for around 25-30 minutes at idle.

That sounds like a great deal! I'll keep that in mind while shopping.

As long as your UPS can handle the load, you should be fine. I’d recommend a UPS with pure sine wave output since it’s kinder to sensitive equipment, though simulated sine wave can work too in most cases. Just be cautious and read reviews to ensure it’ll work well with your power supply.

Thanks for the tip! I'm definitely leaning towards a pure sine wave UPS.

I've got an APC UPS that runs my PC, monitor, and speakers for about 10-15 minutes without power, and it was only around $100. It seems pretty economical for the protection it offers.

Nice! I’ll check out APC—sounds like a solid option.

You can keep your PC on, but don’t expect the UPS to act as a long-term power supply. It's mainly there to give you enough time to shut down safely during an outage. Depending on the load, if your system is around 850w, you might only get 3 minutes max from the UPS. Look for a reputable brand like CyberPower or APC, especially if you want something more reliable for a gaming setup.

That makes sense! Even a minute is a good buffer for me, so I should be okay.

Yeah, if your main concern is downtime, go for a basic UPS that will keep your system running until you can get the power back on.

Yes, a UPS can definitely help keep your PC running during those short outages. I'd recommend looking for a 1500VA model, but watch out for the max wattage it supports since VA and watts aren't the same. It’s also good to check its runtime capabilities since battery life can deteriorate over time. For more reliability, consider getting an electrician to rewire your setup to separate your bedroom circuits from the kitchen appliances.

Absolutely, this is solid advice! If your UPS holds up during outages of a minute or two, you should be good. I suggest a sine wave UPS like the CyberPower CP1500PFCLCD for stability. However, do take care of your wiring, as it might not be safe the way it is.

Yeah, I totally get it! It's crucial to have a reliable UPS that can hold the charge long enough to handle your needs.
