Why Does My Friend’s PC Keep Shutting Down Under Load?

A friend recently built a PC that unexpectedly turns off when it's under load. Initially, he had a 500W power supply, which I thought was inadequate, so I replaced it with a Thermaltake 700W PSU. Unfortunately, the issue continues. The shutdowns happen irregularly, occurring at different points while playing the same games, and sometimes it doesn't shut down at all during gaming sessions. I checked Windows Event Viewer, but it didn't reveal any errors. I can provide details about the motherboard and RAM if necessary. Here are the specs: i5-12600K and RX 5700 XT. Any insight on what might be causing this issue would be greatly appreciated!

I faced similar issues during rendering; my cooler couldn’t handle the CPU's heat output, causing it to shut down unexpectedly. You might want to monitor the temperatures under load. What kind of CPU cooler is he using? It's crucial to ensure that it’s capable of adequately cooling the CPU.

Great suggestion! I’ll download HWMonitor to track the temps. I'll keep you posted on what cooler he’s using.

First off, it’s important to check if the CPU is overheating. Did your friend remove the plastic cover from the CPU cooler? Also, make sure that thermal paste is applied correctly. If it’s overheating, that's likely triggering the shutdowns. It might be worth checking those out!

Thanks for the tip! I plan to check that and reapply the thermal paste this weekend. I didn't notice any plastic cover when I swapped the PSU, but I’ll double-check.
