Can I Turn an Old Laptop into a NAS with USB Drives?

Hey everyone! I have this old Acer laptop that I'm not using anymore, and I'm thinking of repurposing it as a NAS. My plan is to buy a couple of second-hand HDDs and connect them to the laptop using USB adapters. I'm also considering running Linux from a USB drive. Basically, I want to have the laptop set up as a Linux machine connected to my Wi-Fi, so I can transfer files to and from it from my main PC. My main concern is whether having four full-size HDDs connected will draw too much power. Any thoughts?

If you're serious about this, you might be better off getting an old desktop PC and putting some drives directly inside. I've heard from friends who've tried the USB route and weren't happy with the performance. My experience was similar with USB drives — they’re just unreliable. I eventually switched to an old Iomega D200 NAS which runs NAS4Free, and it’s been solid!
