Is it worth upgrading my old PC or should I just build a new one?

I built my PC quite some time ago and it served me well, but since I lost interest in gaming around 2020, I haven't kept up with the latest. I'm looking to get back into gaming but I'm wondering if there's a single component I can upgrade to make it capable of handling current games, or if I should scrap it all and start fresh. Here's my build link for reference: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/2xBB7P.

Before making any decisions, it would help to know your budget for this upgrade, the types of games you're interested in, your target resolution and FPS, and if you'll use the PC for anything beyond gaming. These details are crucial for determining the right components to choose.

You could reuse your power supply and case if you're attached to those, but given your old DDR3 platform, it really limits your upgrade options. Look for deals on used parts to save money, and if there’s a Microcenter nearby, they often have great combo deals. Hold off on upgrading your GPU for now; you can tackle that later.

I had a build from around 2014 until 2020, and I ended up replacing almost everything over time. You picked a tricky moment to upgrade, especially with RAM prices being so high right now. Unfortunately, just upgrading one part in your system probably won't give you significant performance gains for today’s games.

Yeah, timing is everything with upgrades! Definitely factor in your budget.

It's a good point, especially with pricing fluctuations. Wait if you can!

Good call! Knowing your budget and needs really helps narrow it down.

Exactly! Those specifics can change everything for a build.

You might be able to reuse the power supply, fans, and hard drive in a new build, but honestly, the rest will likely need to be replaced. Your power supply is quite old—around 12 years—so it would be wise to invest in a new one that meets modern standards. If you use old hard drives, consider them only for extra storage, not for your OS or games.

Totally agree! For a new build, sticking to updated components for key elements makes a big difference.

Definitely good advice! You don't want to risk issues with an outdated PSU.

Honestly, starting from scratch might be your best bet. You could keep your case and fans if you like them, but everything else should probably go for something newer. The HDDs could work for storage, but I suggest not using them for your OS or games.
