Hey everyone! I have an old CPU with two SATA hard drives, one is 250 GB and the other is 500 GB, which I added later. The last time I used them was in 2018. I'm wondering if there's a way to recover data from these drives using my laptop. I'm willing to buy any necessary cables or adapters if needed. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot in advance!

If the drives aren't encrypted, connecting them directly to a SATA interface should do the trick. However, many laptops don’t have SATA ports anymore; you might need to get an external drive enclosure that connects via USB. Just make sure the enclosure is compatible with SATA drives before you buy it!
Absolutely, you can connect those drives using a USB to SATA adapter with a power supply. I have a similar setup that even works with older IDE drives. Just ensure you get an adapter that includes all the necessary connectors and cables.
You might want to look into a USB to SATA adapter. They're pretty affordable now, and they usually come with their own power source. Just take the drives out of your old unit, connect them to the USB/SATA adapter, and then plug that into your laptop. If the drives are still working, your laptop should recognize them as removable drives.
Have you thought about turning on the old PC to transfer files directly? You could connect a USB drive to copy over your important files. If that doesn’t work, an external drive enclosure using USB to connect to your laptop might be your best bet, just make sure it fits your hard drives and you have the encryption key if it’s encrypted.

What if I accidentally set a password on the drives before? Is there a way to recover them?
