I created a chat a couple of months ago and shared some sensitive personal info. I've deleted the chat, but I'm worried about whether that data is still being kept on servers and if it could be used for training the models. Can someone explain how OpenAI manages chat data and what happens to it after deletion? Do all chats contribute to training data, and how quickly does this happen?

No need to stress too much! OpenAI does a pretty good job of cleaning out sensitive information from the dataset before it's used for training. Just remember to check those settings and opt out if you're really concerned.
You can actually opt out of having your chats used for training in the settings. They mostly focus on the vast amount of data they have, so a single chat won't expose your private info anyways. But yes, there's a chance that even after deletion, some data could persist for a while.
Your chats do hang around on the server for about 30 days after deleting. While OpenAI selects only some conversations for training, it’s possible your chat could still be included within that timeframe if it was flagged for review. The process isn’t fully automatic; they do have trained reviewers to catch sensitive info.
You might be able to request that your data not be included, but it’s still on the server until they fully process the deletion. At this point, turning off training options in settings is your best bet.
So, not all chats end up being used for training. If you've disabled chat history, your conversations won't be stored for that purpose. But just deleting a chat doesn't mean it can't be used if it was already selected for review. It's a good idea to avoid sharing anything sensitive moving forward.
