Hey everyone! I'm diving into Data Science and AI on my old laptop, which has an HDD instead of an SSD. Should I stick with the HDD for now, or should I upgrade to an SSD for a better learning experience? If SSDs are a must, how much storage do you recommend as a minimum? Also, what's a good price range for budget-friendly SSD options? Any specific models you can suggest for someone who's strapped for cash?

I think upgrading to an SSD can really enhance your experience, especially when it comes to loading times and overall responsiveness. For beginners, a 256GB SSD should be plenty to get started. They're around $30 to $50 from brands like Crucial or Kingston, so it shouldn't break the bank. You'll definitely notice the difference when you're working with data!
Honestly, I think you can continue using your HDD without any major issues. Your RAM and possibly the GPU are more likely to hold you back than the type of hard drive. Just dive into learning, and you'll see what limitations pop up. Sometimes working with older hardware can make you a more efficient programmer. I use server hardware for my data science work, and it's often HDD-based, so an SSD isn't a must-have!
While an SSD is nice, it's not critical at this stage. More RAM and a stronger GPU will give you a better performance improvement. If you decide to go for an SSD, I’d recommend getting a larger one for flexibility, but don't go overboard either. For general use, try to aim for at least 500GB if you're planning to work with sizeable datasets.
Totally agree! It's all about balancing your upgrades according to what you're actually working on.
