Should I Upgrade to the 5080 or Stick with My 9070XT?

Hey everyone! I'm relatively new to PC gaming and could use some advice. I recently scored a 5080 Founders Edition at MSRP, and I currently have a Reaper 9070XT. I game exclusively on an LG C3 OLED, playing single-player titles at 4K with all the graphical features cranked up, including ray tracing. My setup includes an AMD 5700X3D, 32GB of RAM, and a 2TB NVMe SSD.

I'm wondering a few things: First, what's the actual performance difference between the 5080 and 9070XT, especially with new AMD ray reconstruction and DLSS 4.5 on the horizon? If I can sell the 9070XT for around $600-700, does the price difference of $300-400 justify the upgrade? Finally, should I consider this an investment in future-proofing my gaming rig? Looking forward to your thoughts!

I might be in the minority here, but I’d suggest keeping the 5080. It might cost a bit more now, but Nvidia GPUs typically hold their value better. Plus, with DLSS 4.5, the performance gap becomes significant. Nvidia often has better support for features like ray tracing and HDR, making it worthwhile for your 4K gaming.

I appreciate the breakdown! Those additional features really interest me, especially the HDR handling. Since it's tough to get HDR calibrated right, having that upgrade might really help.

And let’s not forget, the Founders Edition looks sleek and feels premium! Having something that stands out in your rig is part of the fun.

Honestly, since you've already got the 5080, why not try it out first? At this level, especially around the 5070/9070 tier, you're probably hitting diminishing returns, and most of the performance improvement might not be worth the extra cash.

Thanks for your insight! You make a good point. I did feel a noticeable upgrade moving from a 3080 to the 9070XT – it's hard to resist that urge to upgrade!

If you're thinking of selling and flipping cards often, I say keep the 9070XT. It's a great card, PLUS it holds value pretty well. But if you’re okay with investing in a bit more performance for gaming, the 5080 might be the way to go.

Haha, I totally get that! I do enjoy the thrill of deal hunting. It's just a question of whether I’m chasing numbers or the buying/selling process.

The benchmarks suggest the 5080 is around 15% faster and comes with superior upscaling tech. If you want to push all the graphical settings, consider looking at a 5070 Ti instead as it would still give you a decent bump without spending too much.

The 5080 is objectively the better GPU for your needs. Sure, the 9070XT is solid, but it may require more compromises in the long run. Only you can decide if that extra cost is worth it, based on what games you play and how much detail matters to you.

This is pretty much where I’m leaning too. While both cards are good, for my specific usage, the 5080 seems to come out ahead.
