My Power Supply Unit is Noisy – What Can I Do?

Hey everyone! I recently upgraded my setup from a Fujitsu 250W OEM power supply (PSU) with an i5 6400 and Fujitsu motherboard to a more powerful 650W model for my new Ryzen 5 3600 and B450M S2H motherboard. However, I'm dealing with a major issue - my new PSU is super loud, around 40dB even when my computer is idle. I've heard that switching to a better case might help reduce the noise by about 10dB, since the PSU setup I have now is pretty cramped in my current small Fujitsu tower. I realize the PSU is a budget one, so it can't be completely silent, but it feels like it should be quieter than this. What do you all think I should do to mitigate this noise?

Honestly, the case might not be the main culprit here since the PSU usually vents to the outside. But if your case is blocking airflow, that could make things noisier. Just to clarify, you weren't dumb enough to drill holes in the PSU itself, right?

No no, I drilled the holes in the case, not the PSU!

Just make sure the PSU’s opening is clear; that might help with noise too!

It sounds like you might have just picked a PSU with a loud fan. Some of them run at full speed constantly instead of adjusting to heat levels. If it's bothering you that much, consider investing in a quieter, higher-quality PSU.

Do you think that's a safe move?
