Why Won’t My Monitors Connect to My Laptop When the Docking Station is Plugged In?

I have a Lenovo laptop and two HP monitors that I typically use together with a docking station. The setup is pretty straightforward: I keep my laptop plugged in at my desk and the monitors are connected through HDMI to the dock, which links to the laptop via USB-C. However, when I came to work today, my laptop rebooted and my monitors didn't detect any signal from it. I found that they would only connect when I unplugged the dock's power source, but that's not a viable long-term solution since my laptop's battery will deplete. If I plug the power cord back in, the monitors lose connection again. What can I do to fix this issue and keep the monitors connected while the power is on?

Do you know the model of your docking station? Sometimes updates are necessary for it to function well. Also, check your power settings; make sure that when you close the laptop lid, it's set to 'Do nothing.' This can help prevent issues with display detection.

It's an Anker, if that helps. I actually got it to work again by plugging the power into a different port. But I think I might have a hardware issue on the port I was using. Although my laptop still isn't charging even when it's plugged in.

It sounds like your docking station might have a hiccup. Try reaching out to your IT department if you have one. They might be able to check if a software update is needed, or if there’s a problem with the dock itself. A lot of times it could just be a simple fix on their end.

We don't actually have an IT department here. One of the owners handles all that, but he's out of the office today.
