What’s the Deal with G-Sync Monitors in 2026?

I've been using a Dell monitor that is G-Sync certified since 2018, and it has served me well. I'm thinking about upgrading now, but here's my confusion: back when I bought my monitor, G-Sync required a specialized Nvidia chip. I know Nvidia later began to recognize some monitors as 'G-Sync compatible' without that hardware, but it seems like they didn't perform as reliably. Now, as I'm browsing for a new monitor, I mostly see models labeled as 'G-Sync compatible.' Does this mean they support variable refresh rate but lack the G-Sync chip? Are there still monitors available with the actual G-Sync chip, which I think Nvidia calls 'G-Sync native' now? I'm curious how the non-native support holds up. Although it's great that G-Sync is more affordable, I'm worried about getting clarity on what features are actually supported and how well a monitor will function depending on its specifications.

'G-Sync Compatible' is Nvidia's take on the VRR standards through DisplayPort and HDMI. These monitors are tested for compatibility, ensuring there won't be any issues. On the other hand, the older G-Sync models with the Nvidia hardware module have some perks like variable overdrive to minimize ghosting. They also undergo a stricter certification process concerning motion blur and color accuracy. As for the 'G-Sync Ultimate' models, those are enhanced versions for HDR displays. Currently, the hardware G-Sync implementations are becoming rare due to their high cost without offering much extra value, but if you're set on one, Nvidia maintains a list of certified models. Just remember, it might be wise not to restrict your search to only those.

If you're keeping a G-Sync module monitor, you might not experience worse ghosting with a newer 'G-Sync compatible' monitor with similar specs. Sticking to your old monitor makes sense unless you're ready to shell out for a 'G-Sync Ultimate.' If you’re not looking for more screen real estate or frame rates, and your current monitor has some slight color distortion, it might be worth holding onto it a little longer.

I hear you—it's wild how steep the prices are for G-Sync Ultimate monitors! It's like there’s no happy medium between affordable 'G-Sync compatible' options and those super pricey 'Ultimate' ones. Keeping your old G-Sync native monitor might just be the best choice for now!
