Comparing Performance: 5800X3D Desktop vs. Razer Blade Laptop with 4090

I'm curious about how a desktop setup using a 5800X3D processor paired with an RTX 4070 Ti Super would perform compared to a Razer Blade laptop equipped with a 14900HX CPU and an RTX 4090 graphics card. I'm building a golf simulator in my shed that will be running the latest simulation software, which keeps advancing in quality. While I own a Razer Blade 18 with an RTX 4090, I also have an unraid server with an RTX 4070 Ti Super that can function solely with its integrated GPU. It seems the performance between the RTX 4070 Ti and the RTX 4090 is quite close, so I'm trying to determine whether the CPU capabilities will sway the choice. Given that the golf simulator setup will drive a 4K projector along with a couple of swing cameras in one integrated system, I'm particularly interested in comparing the performance of the 5800X3D's extensive cache against the 14900HX. Additionally, the cost of DDR4 compared to DDR5 is another factor in my decision.

Honestly, the desktop setup would outperform the laptop in most scenarios.

Have you checked reviews for the Razer Blade to see if it shows any signs of thermal throttling? But I see you already have it, so that's good to know!

Am I being silly asking if a golf simulator really needs this kind of power? What’s the specific simulator you’re planning to use?

Not silly at all! A lot of simulation software can be pretty demanding, especially with extra features like cameras. Just curious about which one you're interested in!

Overall, the combo of the 5800X3D and the 4070 Ti Super is likely to outperform your Razer Blade setup. The desktop GPU tends to have better performance since the mobile 4090 typically works with a reduced memory bandwidth and power budget compared to its desktop counterpart.

The 5800X3D is slightly faster than the i9-14900HX, and the 4070 Ti Super edges out the 4090 in some cases. However, it may not be worth investing in the 5800X3D unless you can get it for under $307, especially considering the price disparity for DDR4 versus DDR5. Plus, the 7600X could offer similar performance for a cheaper price.
