How to Unlock an iPad When You Don’t Have the Apple ID or PIN?

I'm trying to help out my wife's godmother, who's 87 years old. She bought an iPad but can't remember her Apple ID or PIN. This is actually the second iPad she's had trouble with—she gave the first one to my mother-in-law, but nothing came of that either. To complicate things, she doesn't have a PC and only has a Samsung phone. She mentioned she set it up in the store but can't recall any of her information. Is there any way to help her out, or is she out of luck?

Something about this situation raises a flag for me. Are you sure everything is as it seems?

If you can show Apple proof of purchase, they can help lift the activation lock. You'll need an original receipt with the iPad’s serial number or IMEI, plus her name on it. It's a good idea to have someone trusted assist her with the setup afterward, including setting a trusted contact for recovery. You might want to set up screen time to prevent this from happening again.

Just a heads up, the Apple ID is now called the Apple Account. If the iPad is displaying a security lockout screen, she’ll need to go to an Apple Store for help. They can erase the iPad, but first, the activation lock must be removed by Apple via a support request online. Afterwards, getting her to choose a new email for a fresh Apple Account with some help from a friend or family member would be a good idea.
