I'm trying to decide between the Ryzen 7 7800X3D and the 9800X3D for my next build. I do a lot of gaming, particularly indie games since my current setup with a GTX 1650 struggles with AAA titles, only hitting around 30-35 fps. I also do video editing and 3D rendering for my ECE projects. I'm aiming for a modern gaming experience at 1440p with stable 60-100 fps in demanding games like Cyberpunk, all while managing smooth rendering performance.
The 7800X3D seems to offer great value and flexibility for GPU upgrades, but I have concerns regarding future-proofing, especially regarding GPU needs in the coming years. On the flip side, I've read that the 9800X3D might have some drawbacks such as high power consumption and compatibility issues, plus concerns about overheating even with decent coolers. Any insights on which CPU would best meet my needs and future proof my setup?

7800X3D is great for gaming, but not the best for productivity. The 9800X3D is a bit better for both gaming and productivity but still lags behind non-X3D chips. If you want a mix of performance, consider the 9950X3D, but it's pricier and has some setup quirks. For bang-for-your-buck, the 7800X3D is the way to go!
Would pairing the 9950X3D with a 5060 Ti yield decent performance? I mean, even a 5-10% CPU increase isn’t too shabby if the price difference is significant.
My advice would be to grab the 7800X3D now; it’s really good! Then consider upgrading to whatever the next Zen 6 X3D will be, as it's rumored to be a significant upgrade with more cores. Don’t get too caught up in future-proofing; focus on what performance fits your budget right now. Also, it might be wise to upgrade your GPU soon, especially with some market changes happening that might trigger panic buying.
Honestly, both CPUs will serve you well for years. I’ve been using the 9800X3D without major issues, and most of the problems arise from using it with Asrock motherboards, which have been fixed for a while now. If you find a good board, you should be set.
I’ve got a 7800X3D paired with a Zotac 4090 and honestly, it handles demanding games like Tarkov and Star Citizen flawlessly. I'm super pleased with my setup and the temps were never a problem thanks to my Corsair water cooler. If you value compatibility and stability, I’d strongly recommend going with the 7800X3D.
It really comes down to what you can spend. I personally use the 9800X3D, and it performs smoothly for me. Just watch out for Asrock motherboards; they can fry your AM5 chip. Otherwise, if you can manage it, the 9800X3D is better, but the 7800X3D is solid too!

It’s a bit misleading to call the 7800X3D terrible for productivity. It’s actually a super competent 8-core CPU that can handle both gaming and productivity tasks quite well.
