Why do my fans speed up and slow down unpredictably?

I've got an RTX 5060, ROG Strix x870-F gaming WiFi board, a Ryzen 9 9950x processor, and 32GB of DDR5 RAM. I'm noticing that my fans ramp up and slow down frequently. I tried adjusting the fan speeds in the BIOS, but it didn't seem to have any effect. Also, I've observed that when I install an application, the fans ramp up and then go back down afterward. Can anyone help me understand what's going on?

It sounds like your fan behavior might be normal. Fans often speed up to cool off your CPU when it heats up, then slow down when temperatures drop. However, you shouldn't see them ramping up just because you're installing an app like Steam. That seems excessive. You might want to check if the fan is set to respond to the right temperature sensor in your BIOS. If it's just reacting too sensitively, you could adjust that setting.

That makes sense! But how do I find out if the fan is linked to the right sensor?

Look for settings related to fan control or temperature sensor adjustments in the BIOS. If the CPU fan is connected to the wrong header, it might be reading the wrong temperature.

Honestly, I wonder if this is a joke! Fans should work smoothly—it's annoying when they act up like that. But I guess if everything is set up correctly and it still happens, it could be a hardware issue, right?
