I built a desktop for my mom around ten years ago, using a Gigabyte B150M-D3H motherboard with an Intel i5-6400 processor and 8GB of DDR4-2133 RAM. It's been running smoothly with no issues, but I want to upgrade it for Windows 11. I'm aware that I could force the installation, but I'd rather go for a proper hardware upgrade. I'm planning to keep the case, drives, and power supply, but I need to replace the motherboard and CPU, and possibly the RAM and CPU cooler. I've checked the list of supported CPUs for Windows 11 and I'm cross-referencing them with PC Part Picker. I'm sure there are others in similar situations, and I could use some advice on the most cost-effective CPU and motherboard combos available.

To save money, I'd recommend checking out platforms like Facebook Marketplace or local ads for used parts. Something like a Ryzen 3XXX series CPU would be a solid choice. You might even consider buying a whole system and selling off the parts you don't need. Do you have an SSD in your current setup? That can help maximize your upgrade potential!
I’m usually hesitant to buy used hardware too. It’s fine when it’s my own setup, but with a family member's computer, I’m worried. I think I only need to swap out the CPU and motherboard, maybe the RAM or cooler as well. If I switch to AMD, will that affect my existing RAM and cooler? I’m not sure about the implications of sticking with a newer Intel generation. By the way, it does have both an SSD and regular hard drives.
