What Interview Questions Should I Prepare for a Mid-Level Cloud Engineer Role?

I'm getting ready for my second-round interview for a mid-level Azure Cloud Engineer position at a large company. The first round was with HR, and this upcoming one will involve a team member, the team lead, and HR again. I'll need to conduct the interview in English, which isn't my native language. I have about a year of Azure cloud experience under my belt, along with a total of five years in IT, but not specifically in cloud. I was promoted to mid-level because I successfully addressed a problem that had stumped the team for years, mainly by establishing a better connection with our clients.

I'm looking for insights on what technical questions I can expect in this interview. The job involves managing daily operations in ServiceNow such as incidents, changes, requests, and problems. I'm also responsible for managing and monitoring cloud infrastructure to guarantee optimal performance and reliability, ensuring security and compliance in cloud environments, automating cloud operations and workflows with tools like Azure DevOps, Terraform, and PowerShell, troubleshooting cloud issues, optimizing performance and costs, and designing and implementing Azure cloud solutions.

For technical questions, expect discussions around networking, especially regarding migrating from on-prem to cloud environments. You might be asked how to set up gateways, how to troubleshoot connectivity issues, and how you monitor your Azure environment. Familiarize yourself with Infrastructure as Code concepts too, since that's part of the role. Also, they'll probably want to know about your approach to incident management in ServiceNow, including how you prioritize and escalate issues. And don’t forget to prepare for the classic questions about your career goals and why you want to work with them. Good luck!

You should definitely prepare for scenario questions involving troubleshooting. They might give you a mock incident ticket and ask how you'd resolve it. They won't only test your technical skills but also your problem-solving mindset. Make sure you think about how you can discuss cost optimization strategies for Azure, since that's such a key topic right now. Also, consider structuring your answers to showcase your past experiences, especially that success story about connecting with clients—it's a great illustration of your problem-solving skills.

Be ready for some deep questions! You might get asked about designing serverless applications for disaster recovery, explaining the well-architected framework, or how you would monitor costs in Azure. They'll likely want to hear about your experience with automation tools and how you keep up with industry trends. Also, expect some scenario-based questions like how to troubleshoot a non-booting VM or how you would secure services. Having specific examples from your experience will really help.
