I'm looking for some advice on which Linux distro to choose for my 15-year-old PC. It has 16GB of RAM, an Nvidia 1050 Ti, and an Intel i7-2600 CPU running at 3.4GHz. I usually use it to watch movies and play games in my living room using Steam and emulators. Right now, I'm on Ubuntu 22.04, but the GNOME interface has been lagging. I tried switching to LXDE, but it's not completely smooth and still has GNOME leftovers that bother me. I want to do a clean install to remove Windows and recover some disk space. I'm considering either Kubuntu or Lubuntu, as I want a setup that's lightweight but not too problematic like my current one. I'm open to any tips about preserving my current configurations before the fresh install, too!

If you're leaning toward Lubuntu, keep in mind it uses LXQt which is the newer version of LXDE. You might want to try running `sudo apt install lubuntu-desktop` to see how it feels. But honestly, with your hardware, Kubuntu could run perfectly well if you're after something more feature-rich. Trying a live USB session could help you decide on the desktop environment you prefer!
I'm using MX Linux with XFCE on similar hardware, and it's been great for gaming! The Nvidia driver installation is super easy with their tools. If you're not set on Lubuntu or Kubuntu, you might want to check MX Linux out, as it's lightweight and stable, perfect for your use case.
Honestly, your PC's specs are still quite capable! While Lubuntu is lightweight with LXQt, Kubuntu has KDE Plasma which offers more features. It's all about personal preference; some love the extra capabilities of KDE, while others might find LXQt simpler. Either way, booting from a live USB should give you a good feel before you install.
