How Can We Improve User Activation During Onboarding?

We're noticing that while our product has a critical 'aha moment' in step 3, a staggering 80% of users drop off at step 1. This is pretty typical for activation issues, I know. Even after attempts to simplify step 1—like progress bars and reminder emails—there's been minimal change in retention. Has anyone found effective ways to enhance multi-step onboarding, or is it better to just accept the drop-off and focus on attracting more users at the top of the funnel? This issue is really hurting our activation rates, and I'm looking for genuine advice.

Have you thought about flipping the order? Maybe show the 'aha moment' right away or at least make it more visible upfront? If that’s not feasible, it seems like you need to rethink the whole onboarding flow. Attention spans are short, and if they don’t get to the value quickly, they might lose interest altogether.

Honestly, consider that maybe your product isn't resonating as much as you think it is. If people are dropping off before completing the first step, they might not be interested enough. It’s tough, but sometimes the feedback can be hard to hear!

You might just need to accept that many users lack the motivation to push through onboarding if there's any friction involved. Having progress bars can help, but only if they care about reaching the end. What you might need is a guided tour or tool to direct their attention to the actual value in step 3. It could save a lot of dev time instead of trying to build it all yourself. Just show them what they need to do and why it’s worth it—if the value is clear, they'll stick around!

Yeah, activation can feel impossible sometimes. If potential users don’t immediately see value, they’re less likely to go through the onboarding hassle. Perhaps you could even create a short video that highlights the key features they’ll gain. That could give them a good glimpse of what they can expect and might encourage them to commit to the process.

If your 'aha moment' really depends on steps 1 and 2, think about giving them a sneak peek of step 3 earlier on. It could serve as an incentive for them to follow through with the rest of the onboarding process.
