I'm currently diving into backend development using JavaScript (Node.js) and working on real projects to step beyond just tutorials. However, I find myself facing two major issues that make me anxious. First, I often freeze up during interviews, worried that even if I know the material, I won't be able to code neatly or think clearly under pressure. Second, while I feel I have a grasp on concepts like authentication, APIs, and databases, I struggle to explain or apply them smoothly when it counts. I'm not looking for standard advice like 'just grind LeetCode' or 'build projects for six months'; I want to know what specifically worked for you. How did you practice to turn your learning into interview success? What strategies helped you shift from knowing a concept to applying and explaining it confidently? I'm particularly interested in insights from those who have felt anxious at times, interviewed for backend or full-stack positions, or improved after failing interviews. I'd love to hear your real experiences, even if they weren't perfect solutions. Thanks for any tips!

One thing that really helped me was doing mock interviews on platforms like interview.io or attending local meetups. If your meetup doesn’t already have mock interviews, suggest starting them; you might find a group that’d be interested in practicing together. At one meetup I went to, we had live interviews in front of the group, and afterward, everyone would provide feedback. Some attendees even got hired from referrals after those practice sessions!
The key for me has been to repeatedly code and learn. It takes time for all those concepts and syntax to stick in your long-term memory. If you try to only learn something once or twice, don’t be surprised if you struggle to recall it later. It’s a normal part of the process. Even with years of coding experience, I still freeze up during interviews sometimes! Remember, good interviewers understand and don’t penalize you for not recalling every tiny detail.
I found recording myself while answering interview questions super beneficial. Whether on video or just audio, it really helps you see how you communicate. You can catch if your answers are clear or if you tend to ramble, which is crucial for making a good impression.
