Hey everyone! I recently lost my dad, who left me his 2024 MacBook and iPhone, but I never got a chance to get the passwords for them. I really want to download his photos and eventually start using these devices, but I don't have the heart to do this until now. Unfortunately, he didn't include me as a legacy contact. How can I gain access to his Apple devices? I appreciate any help you can provide!

Gaining access to the devices without resetting them is tough because Apple won't provide help without the password. However, if you can get into your dad's Apple ID, you can access his iCloud data. If the iPhone has a passcode that’s blocking access, unfortunately, Apple won’t help there either, and you'll likely need to reset the device. Once you’re into the Apple ID, you can reset the Mac password and move forward from there.
Your best bet is to reach out to Apple Support directly, especially since you're in Canada. They can guide you on what documents you'll need to provide. Remember, his Apple ID is considered part of his estate, so you may need legal documentation to access it.
I’m really sorry for your loss; this situation can feel so overwhelming. Be cautious with too many login attempts since they can lock the devices. If you have access to his email or a phone number, see if you can reset the password that way. Also, check his papers for any written-down passwords, as he might have left something behind that could help.
This is a tricky situation, especially without being a Legacy Contact. In the U.S., you'd probably need a court order to prove you're entitled to these devices. It should include your dad's Apple ID, your name, and some legal backing stating you're his heir. Just FYI, the process can vary if you're in another country, like Canada, where submitting probate might be needed instead.
