Will Deleting a Game Free Up RAM on My Oculus Headset?

I've been dealing with crashes on my Oculus 2 headset due to insufficient memory. I know that deleting a game can free up space, but I'm wondering if it will also clear up RAM. If I uninstall a game that consumes a lot of memory, will I get that memory back or is the RAM only freed when the game is closed?

You’re right that uninstalling the game will get you back storage space, but RAM is a different thing. You only free up RAM when you stop using the game or app. You might consider checking your task manager to see what's using up RAM and close those programs.

Deleting a game doesn’t directly free up RAM. RAM is only used while a game is actively running. Once you exit out of a game, it releases the RAM it was using. So if your headset is crashing, you might just need to close some apps rather than uninstalling anything. If you have other programs open, especially web browsers, they might be hogging RAM. Restarting your headset can also help clear up any leftover memory.

Just to clarify, "storage" and "memory" aren't the same. Deleting an app will free up storage space, but it won't free up RAM unless the app is currently running. If you notice your headset struggling, try closing some running apps instead of uninstalling them. Another tip is to restart the headset to clear out any background processes that might be lingering.

The key is to remember that running apps consume RAM. If you delete a game that isn’t currently running, all you’re really doing is freeing up storage, not RAM. If you’re having issues, focus more on managing the apps you have running simultaneously.

It sounds like you've got a good grasp on the difference! Just to add, even if you uninstall a game, if there are background processes still running, those can still take up your RAM. Keeping your Oculus updated and restarting when you face issues can help improve performance.
