I'm looking to build my portfolio, but almost every backend hosting option I find requires payment. As a broke college student, I'm trying to find ways to deploy my backend without spending money. Any advice?

What specific tech are you looking to deploy for your backend? I mean, are you working with Node.js or something else?

I'm all about Node.js!

You could consider using Raspberry Pis at home for your backend services. By utilizing Cloudflare Tunnels, you can expose your frontends to the web while keeping most communication local. It's a bit hands-on but can be fun, and it's free!

Are Cloudflare Tunnels totally free to use?

Just a heads up, remember that Cloudflare can see your unencrypted traffic since they handle SSL. It may or may not be a concern for you.

Check out platforms like Render which offer generous free tiers. With a quick Google search, you can find several free backend providers. They often have a solid range of services that won't cost you a dime!

But doesn't Render ask for credit card info?

If you're just building a portfolio, GitHub Pages is a great option. You get a free site at yourusername.github.io. I used it during university, and it worked out perfectly for me! Just remember it's good for static sites only, no backend capabilities.

Doesn't GitHub Pages only support static sites without any backend functionality?

Look into Google Cloud or Oracle; both offer free VMs. Just make sure to read their guidelines to keep it cost-free! Also, AWS has a free tier for the first year—great for students learning the ropes.
