Which is the better choice: Higher quality motherboard or faster RAM for a 7800X3D build?

I'm trying to decide between two different PC builds for a 7800X3D processor, and I'm stuck on whether to prioritize the motherboard or the RAM. I have one option with a GigaByte AM5 B650M D3HP AX Micro ATX motherboard paired with 6000CL30 RAM, which is ideal for the CPU. The other option features a more expensive GigaByte AM5 B850 EAGLE WIFI 6E ATX motherboard but with 6000CL36 RAM. Which compromise would be better in the long run? Both setups also have the same GPU, the 5070 Shadow. I appreciate any advice you can give!

Honestly, when dealing with an x3D processor, the difference in RAM latency is likely negligible. I tried a setup with 6400 CL38 compared to 6000 CL36, and I didn’t notice any difference in performance. I'd recommend going for the B850 motherboard, especially if you plan on upgrading to the newer CPUs in the future. The B650 might not handle future power demands as well due to its VRM limitations.

That makes sense! If I eventually change the CPU down the road, will the B850 still be a good choice or will it become obsolete?

Have you checked out the differences between CL30 and CL36 RAM? The performance difference is usually minor, but it’s worth looking into. Some say gaining a lower latency isn't always significant, especially with a capable CPU like the 7800X3D. So, getting CL30 might be better, but if the motherboard is more sturdy, it could make a difference in stability down the line.

Right, the difference seems small, but since the motherboard can affect overall performance, I wonder if getting the B850 is a smarter move.
