Hey everyone! My old OptiPlex 9070 i7 is starting to fail, so I'm looking to upgrade my PC. I usually play games like Overwatch, modded Minecraft, RimWorld, Factorio, Arc Raiders, and sometimes Fallout. Right now, my computer handles these games well on low settings, and I'm not really aiming for 4K or high FPS anymore. However, it's taking forever to start up and has been freezing and losing internet connection randomly.
I've done some research on parts, but I wanted to get opinions on whether this setup looks decent, or if I should spend a little more for better performance. Here's what I'm planning:
- Motherboard: Asus ROG Strix B650-A Gaming WIFI (Socket AM5) DDR5 ATX - £160
- CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 7600 Six Core 5.10GHz (Socket AM5) Processor - £160
- RAM: Integral 8GB DDR5 RAM 4800MHz SDRAM x2 (I have one stick now and will buy another) - £120
- Storage: Crucial P3 500GB (for Windows), plus an existing 1TB SSD and two old 1TB hard drives
- GPU: I have a 1050 Ti (current) and an RX 480 that my dad got for me but haven't used yet
- Power Supply: CiT FX Pro 700W 80 PLUS Bronze Non-Modular
Will all of this work together? I know my graphics card is a major bottleneck, and I'm planning to upgrade it once I can afford it. Any thoughts?

Your hard drive is probably the culprit for those slow boot times and freezes. It might be about time to replace it. As for the new build, AM5 with the 7600 is a great choice, but you should really aim for a faster RAM kit than 4800MHz. It can hold your CPU back. And about your power supply, look at getting a more reputable brand for reliability.
If you switch to the RX 480 from the 1050 Ti, you'll definitely see improvements while you save up for a newer GPU.
8GB of RAM is pretty low these days. You’ll want at least 16GB, as most gamers are aiming for 32GB for a smoother experience overall. Your GPU is definitely outdated, which will impact your performance.
I agree, I’m thinking of getting 16GB myself, especially with RAM prices dropping a bit. Better to be safe for future games.
Yeah, I’ve noticed RAM is becoming cheaper. I'll definitely keep an eye out for better deals on 16GB.
Honestly, the GPU is going to be a big limitation. You might get some older games to run at 1080p and low settings, but the newer titles will struggle a lot. You should definitely look at upgrading your graphics card soon after your build.
I’ve played modern games on an i7 with a slightly older RX570 and managed 70-80 fps at 1080p, so it’s not impossible if you keep the settings low.
I’ve definitely played most new titles with similar setups, just at very low settings, and can still get around 60 fps. Arc Raiders played surprisingly well on my older GPU.
If I were you, I’d hold off on building this until you can get a decent GPU. I have a laptop with an older GPU, and newer games have started to be unsupported. It might be worth waiting to invest in a better graphics card first.
I see your point, but I think upgrading in stages could work. I usually invest heavily in my build except for the GPU and upgrade later as technology improves.

Yeah, I did switch to an SSD last year, but it hasn’t helped that much. I'm just trying to get this build ready as soon as I can.
