I'm having trouble setting up an Oracle VirtualBox with a 2018 Ubuntu Linux virtual machine for my class. My teacher insists on using this specific VM, but I'm on a Microsoft Surface laptop with an ARM64 processor, while the VM is designed for x86. I'm really trying to avoid using the stationary computers at school. Is there a workaround or solution that could help me out? I'm feeling desperate!

Running x86 VMs on an ARM architecture can be quite tricky. While there are translation layers that may help, they usually don’t function well for virtual machines. Your best bet might be to remote into an x86 machine if possible. Otherwise, creating an aarch64 VM would likely not fulfill your project needs.
Unfortunately, VirtualBox has struggled with performance for x86 VMs on ARM CPUs. My suggestion is to chat with your instructor about your situation. They might be open to considering alternative options since ARM processors are becoming more common. For now, it looks like you may have to use a school computer for this project.
Does it have to be done on your personal laptop? If not, why not explore using a cloud virtual desktop for your work? It could provide a solution, but you’ll need to confirm with your teacher that it meets the requirements.
