I'm a bit late to the game, but my company is finally ready to move away from VMware and we want to explore more affordable options. We're mainly using Windows servers, but we're open to switching to a Linux-based hypervisor. I'd love some recommendations on who we should set up demos with!

We switched to Proxmox, and it’s fitting our needs well. Though I got to admit, the support isn’t the best for the community edition. For compliance reasons, we need solid vendor support which is something to consider.

Understandable! Support is definitely key when you're handling compliance.

First things first, list out the features you're using—like data centers, replication, high availability, etc. Prioritize them into 'must-have' and 'nice-to-have' categories. Your setup size will also matter; can you separate production from test/dev environments? One big client of mine is shrinking their VMware usage to only critical apps while moving others to a new platform for testing and training. Think about what you really need before choosing.

Absolutely! Defining your requirements is crucial before diving into options.

Great point! I had some features in mind, but a structured list will definitely help.

I recently migrated to Hyper-V, and it’s been smooth sailing so far. It works great for both Windows and Linux VMs, and the transition was manageable via our backup solution.

Same here! It’s been pretty seamless for my migration too.

You might want to check out Hyper-V or Proxmox. Both are popular choices for those moving away from VMware.

Or don't forget about Nutanix! It's worth considering too.

It depends on whether you're using VMware-specific features. If you're not, the common alternatives are Hyper-V, Proxmox, XCP-NG, and Nutanix.
