I recently scored a free GeForce RTX 3080, and I'm excited to upgrade my rig! My current setup includes a Ryzen 5 3600 and a 500W power supply, with an old GTX 1660 Super. I also received two SSDs, one being a 1TB and the other a 500GB WD Blue SATA. Since I'm planning to use the 3080, do I need to upgrade my power supply? And is my CPU going to bottleneck the performance? Down the line, I might consider upgrading the CPU, so would I need a new cooler as well, or could I stick with the one that came with my HP OMEN 30L?

It's fantastic that you got the 3080! I agree, your PSU needs to be swapped for something around 750 to 850W—aim for reputable brands for reliability. The 3600 will work but be aware that you might see some frame drops in demanding games. As for coolers, the stock cooler is fine for moderate use, but if you go for a higher-end CPU later, upgrading the cooler would be a smart move to keep temperatures in check.
Time to rethink your build! If you want the best performance, going with a 5000 series Ryzen is a solid choice. Your current 3600 will technically work, but it might hold back that 3080 in graphically intense games. Just make sure whichever PSU you get is high quality and if you can, save for a good cooler too, especially if you're looking at some overclocking in the future!
Totally agree! A good cooler and PSU can really enhance system performance and longevity.
Yes, you're definitely going to need a better power supply for that 3080. The founders edition can draw around 320W, so a PSU upgrade to at least 750W is essential—850W would be even better. As for your CPU, the Ryzen 5 3600 can work but it might bottleneck the GPU during heavy gaming. Upgrading to a Ryzen 5000 series would give you a significant boost, but it really depends on your budget. If you choose to upgrade the CPU, you might also need a better cooler depending on the new CPU you get.
Great advice! I think for now, focusing on a solid PSU and later on the CPU is a smart budget strategy.
