Has Anyone Weathered a Severe Storm at a Colocation Facility?

With the unpredictable weather and potential for power outages in the U.S., has anyone considered waiting out a storm at their colocation facility? I'd like to know if these places have specific policies for such situations—I'm thinking about how one could charge devices or maybe stash some entertainment while waiting out the storm. I live in an area that's expected to be safe during the upcoming weather event, but it's an interesting thought! Just to clarify, I'm not talking about living there long-term—more like a short visit to ride out a storm.

Honestly, going to a colocation facility during a storm seems risky unless you absolutely have to. Most colo facilities have backup power and staff on-site. But if you don't own the space, it's probably best to stay away; you don't want to get in trouble with the management. Just because they have policies against it doesn't mean it's a good idea to go uninvited. Plus, they might just kick you out if things get dicey!

That's what I was thinking! I wouldn't want to overstay my welcome or create issues. It's definitely better to let the staff handle the situation.

Yeah, some places have strict policies about who can be there during severe weather. You could end up in a bad spot if you're not allowed access.

With all the weather craziness, some places have ruined their chances of allowing folks in due to insurance liabilities. So it really depends on the contract and the facility's policy. It’s best to check ahead before planning anything unusual like that.

Smart advice! Always good to know the rules before testing the waters.

Yep, like they say, better safe than sorry!

Most colocations I know don’t let you hang out there during a storm. My old place went on lockdown when hurricanes were nearby. They don’t want just anyone wandering around.

Yeah, I get that. Security must be a big concern during severe weather.

Makes sense! These places are about maintaining uptime, not having random people wandering around.

I once had a wild experience during a tornado watch at a datacenter in Texas. We were chilling outside when suddenly the sirens went off, and we had to rush inside. They had backup power, but we had to camp out in a conference room without much comfort. It was a wild ride, but hey, at least we made it through!

That sounds intense! Glad you stayed safe. At least you had some company!

Crazy! It's good you all were prepared. I can imagine it being pretty stressful.

Back in the day, I spent some time in a data center during bad weather. We had comfy chairs, snacks, and power backup. But nowadays, flying in and out of those places for safety is usually not an option during storms. Best to keep safe at home when possible!

Exactly! Home is where I want to be if things go south.

True that! Better to be cozy at home with family instead.
