I'm getting back into PC gaming and building a mini-ITX PC that will also serve my work-from-home needs. My current laptop is slow, which is pushing me to make this upgrade. I'm on a budget and planning to buy parts gradually, starting with the essentials like the SSD, CPU, and GPU, due to concerns about price increases.
Living close to a Micro Center, I have some great deals available. I'm currently considering:
- Ryzen 5 5600 for $144.99
- Ryzen 7 5800X for $199.99 (this comes with a wireless Corsair mouse)
- Ryzen 5 5500 for about $70 (special deal at Micro Center)
I've heard the 5600 is a solid value option, but the 5800X has extra cores which might boost multitasking and future-proofing. The 5500 is very affordable, but I'm unsure if it will hold up in the long run.
I'm also weighing the option of switching to AM5, but with the current prices for DDR5 and motherboards, I'm leaning towards sticking with AM4.
For best long-term value, what should I do? Is the 5800X worth it, should I go for the 5600, or should I just grab the 5500 and invest more in the GPU or SSD? Any advice for mini-ITX setups would be really helpful!

I'd say go with the 5600. It's really the sweet spot for price and performance. The 5800X is a bit overkill unless you need to stream or do some heavy multitasking. As for AM5, I'd avoid it for now—you're just paying a premium to be an early adopter without much real benefit at this point.

Are you referring to the 5500 that’s $70? The 5600 is $144, right? And yeah, I feel the same way about AM5.
