Will pairing an APU with a dedicated GPU improve graphics performance?

I'm not super tech-savvy about how all the components in a PC work together, so I have a question. If I pair an APU, like the Ryzen 7 5700G, with a dedicated GPU such as the NVIDIA RTX 3070 Twin Edge 8GB, will that actually enhance performance in gaming or graphics tasks? Or is it a waste of money?

If you do go ahead with this setup, make sure to disable your APU in BIOS—it'll save you from future hassle. Just ensure that your dedicated GPU is recognized as the primary option.

Theoretically, you might see some benefits with certain configurations, like dual GPU setups, but for straightforward raw performance, it won’t improve much. Also, if you pick the 5700G over a better CPU, you might end up with lower performance because of its smaller cache.

No, it won't boost performance in the way you’re hoping for. If you're getting a 5700G just to enhance the 3070's performance, you're not making the best choice. A non-G Ryzen CPU with better specs would serve you much better for gaming.

Not really. While there are some unique ways to use your integrated GPU (like managing a secondary monitor or maybe helping with video tasks), it won't help increase frame rates in games.

The one potential upside to using an APU is to offload non-demanding tasks to save VRAM on your dedicated GPU. For instance, you could run your desktop interface on the iGPU to free up resources, but honestly, you'd probably get better results from a stronger dedicated GPU than relying on integrated graphics.
