What’s the Best Approach to Transitioning from On-Prem Infrastructure to the Cloud?

I'm finally nearing the end of a long journey to eliminate our on-prem infrastructure in about a year, after struggling with a lot of technical debt over the past two years. We're set to replace our outdated ERP system, which will make our local setup unnecessary. We're currently using a hybrid model without local Exchange servers and are excited about moving away from domain controllers and other outdated stuff. Before diving into research and planning, I would love to hear what the migration process looks like from a high-level perspective. I'm envisioning flipping the switch and enjoying a much simpler life without on-prem complications.

Moving to the cloud doesn't mean all your tech issues disappear. Be prepared for some executives to question budget increases a few months or years down the line. You’ll want to plan your migration knowing you may need to fallback to on-prem solutions in the future. It's definitely something to think about as you make the switch!

100% agree with this! Too many companies do a straightforward move to the cloud and then get blindsided by the costs without realizing they haven't built in for failures.

Exactly! Plus, you need to ensure you have proper backups. Don’t just assume everything will be smooth sailing after the transition.

Congrats on shedding the legacy systems! Just a reminder to keep a solid backup strategy for any old accounts or processes that might still rely on your previous setup. You’ll inevitably encounter some lingering dependencies, so it’s wise to plan for them even after you think you're all set.

Absolutely! It's always those last-minute surprises that can cause headaches. Take your time to ensure you’ve covered all bases.

Right? It's pretty common that after you cut ties, you'll still find users needing access to some of those old services!

Just a heads up, don't be surprised if in a few years you end up moving back on-prem! Many companies have done that recently because of soaring costs and outages in the cloud. However, congrats on making the transition! Just remember, claiming you've ditched all on-prem sounds good, but you’re basically shifting to someone else’s on-prem with service like Azure.

Yeah, moving away from physical servers sounds nice until you realize that with the cloud, you still have to deal with the risks of outages and those pesky egress charges!

For sure! Many just replicate their existing setup in the cloud and then wonder why costs go up without even considering scalability or redundancy.

Be cautious about your cloud file servers, too. Many people mistakenly think SharePoint serves the same purpose as a traditional file server, but it’s not designed for that. Make sure you choose the right solution for your file sharing needs.

That's so true! You need to consider your specific data needs, especially if you’re migrating legacy data that doesn’t fit neatly into SharePoint.

For sure! I’d love to know if there are better alternatives that can efficiently handle legacy data without getting tied to traditional setups.
