Could My GPU Be Dead If My PC Won’t Start?

I need some help diagnosing an issue with my PC. It suddenly powered off and now it won't boot back up. After letting it cool for a bit and reconnecting the power cable, the fans briefly spin, but that's it. I unhooked all the cables and even removed the RAM to reset everything, but still no luck. When I disconnected my GPU (a 4060), the PC turned on, which has me thinking the GPU might be dead. I tried reseating it in both PCIe slots, but the computer won't boot when the GPU is connected. Alternatively, I wonder if it could be an issue with the motherboard's PCIe slot or the power supply, since the GPU was working fine beforehand. I also switched to a 27" OLED monitor today from a 24" VA display. If I need to get a new GPU, I'm considering a 5060, but is there any reason I should look at other brands apart from Nvidia for gaming?

Have you checked for any motherboard error lights? Those can provide clues about what’s going on. If you have two PCIe slots, try using the second one if you haven’t already. Also, if you’re considering a new GPU and want to save some cash, the RX 9060 XT is a solid option; it often beats Nvidia cards in terms of performance for the price. Just a thought in case you’re open to AMD!

That’s odd! First things first, how powerful is your power supply? If it isn’t strong enough, it might be struggling to power the GPU along with everything else. Also, if you have all your PC specs handy, that could help narrow things down. What wattage is your PSU?

It's 700w.
