Is my device safe if someone knows my MAC address?

I've been wondering about the security implications of my MAC address. If someone knows it, can they hack into my device? I'm considering changing it, but if I choose something simple and someone guesses it, would that cause any issues?

Your MAC address is only relevant on your local network, it won't expose you to the internet. Even if someone knows your MAC address, they can't hack you without being on the same network. Modern operating systems often randomize MAC addresses to protect privacy too. No big deal!

So I don't have to worry about changing it to a silly format, right? Just making sure I don’t accidentally create a vulnerability.

Short answer: no. Your MAC address is useless outside your local network. Just make sure your network is secure, and you should be good. If you're planning to change it, just avoid anything too predictable, in case it gives someone ideas!

Makes sense! I just want to be cautious. Thanks for reassuring me!

Nope, you're pretty safe! Knowing someone's MAC address is like knowing the serial number of their toaster—useful for identifying it among others, but that's about it. They'd need physical access to your device to actually do anything harmful.
