Why are my download speeds stuck at 2 MB/s when they used to be much higher?

I've noticed that my download speeds have dropped significantly. I used to get around 20 MB/s, but now they hover around 2 MB/s across different platforms like Steam and my browser. I'm connected via Wi-Fi, and I've updated all my drivers directly from MSI's website. When I tested my internet speed with my ISP, I got about 29 Mbps, whereas both my phone and another laptop reached speeds of about 240 Mbps. What could be causing this slow download speed? I did see a brief spike to 30 MB/s before it dropped back down to 2 MB/s—that's unusual for me.

It could be that your Wi-Fi adapter is getting old or overheating. Have you thought about trying a different USB Wi-Fi dongle just to see if that makes a difference?

Check if your computer is on the same band as your other devices. Make sure you're using 5GHz and not 2.4GHz. Also, ensure your hard drive has enough free space—ideally not running low. It’s worth checking your Wi-Fi adapter settings too; power-saving options might be slowing you down.

Everything is set to 5GHz, and I have about 200GB free space. I thought I had my PC on high performance mode, but I switched the adapter’s power saving setting from auto to off, and it didn't help.

You might be using an older Wi-Fi standard by mistake. Verify that you're connected using Wi-Fi 5 at 5GHz and check your negotiated speeds—ideally, it should be around 500-800 Mbps. If the signal quality is poor, that could also affect your speeds. Double-check that your Wi-Fi antenna is correctly connected and not obstructed.
