I'm trying to help someone who can't access an Excel file they created a few months back in OneDrive. The link they have now gives an error message saying they can't access the document. Both of us are unable to find the file since the only thing we have is the link. I've even checked the OneDrive recycle bins, but it's not there. Does anyone have suggestions on how to locate this file?

Definitely make sure to look in the OneDrive recycle bin online. If it’s not there, the file might have been permanently deleted or moved elsewhere, which would break the link. As an admin, you can check the audit logs to see if there were any delete or move events.
The link should usually tell you who owns the file if it's OneDrive and not SharePoint. If the owner’s account is deactivated or they've lost their license, that could explain the access issue. It seems like the file belongs to someone else and not the user trying to access it.
Could this be a link from a former employee? If the account was deactivated, the file might be gone too. Check if they ever accessed the file through their recent list in Excel; that might help locate it by name.
Have you considered restoring the file from a backup? If it's crucial, that's always a solid option.
Is this a personal OneDrive account, or is it linked to SharePoint? If it's personal, try searching for it on the web version of OneDrive. Sometimes files do show up there even when they don't on the desktop app.
