How important is it to invest in a good power supply unit (PSU) for long-term use?

I'm getting back into PC building with a low-spec AM4 system I just picked up. It has a Ryzen 3 1200, 8GB of RAM, and an RX 570. I'm trying to keep upgrades cost-effective and manageable over time rather than splurging on high-end parts. I've heard mixed opinions about power supply units (PSUs) and want to know how much emphasis I should put on getting a good one. The setup came with a Corsair VS450, which I read isn't very reliable. I want something that will last several years and possibly support future upgrades, perhaps even a switch to AM5 or DDR5 down the line. Would you recommend spending a little extra for a reliable PSU now to save on buying multiple cheaper units later? I'm considering the Corsair RM650e, which is modular and has a good warranty. What are your thoughts on PSUs and which brands or ratings should I look for?

Definitely prioritize a good PSU! It can last over a decade, and if you skimp on it, it could lead to other components failing due to unstable power. Aim for a reputable brand, ideally an 80+ Gold rated PSU in the 650-850 watt range, which is often the sweet spot for many builds.

Absolutely! Plus, many come with warranties that guarantee they'll last at least a solid 10 years.

The PSU is critical; it essentially powers everything else in your build. Bad power can damage your components, so spending a bit more on a known brand gives you peace of mind. I personally trust Seasonic for their reliability. If you can swing it, go for a Gold rating or higher.

There are some decent PSUs out there that won't break the bank. Just make sure to check user reviews and tier lists to see how they perform over time. You might find that some less-known brands stand up well against the more pricey options!

For sure! And don’t forget to look at warranty options. It’s a good indicator of how much faith a manufacturer has in their product.

Honestly, a good PSU is key. I’ve seen cheap ones fail and take out other components, which can be a big headache. You might not need the most expensive model, but ensuring it has a good rating and warranty will save you stress in the long run. The RM650e sounds like a solid choice.

Where can I find these rating lists? I’m curious about what's wrong with the Corsair CX series; I've had my eye on the RM650e myself.

In my experience, it's the most crucial part of the system. You wouldn’t buy a high-end car and throw on cheap tires, right? Don't cheap out on safety! A good PSU can prevent your expensive components from getting fried.
