I just built a new PC and I'm trying to use my USB key with Windows 11 on it to update the BIOS, but it's write-protected. I've attempted to remove the protection using the command prompt without success and also checked the Registry Editor, but couldn't find any relevant settings. I'm at a standstill and would appreciate any advice! Is it even possible to remove the write protection, or should I just buy a new USB drive for the BIOS updates?

You can't actually remove the write protection from those official USB keys. They have a firmware lock that prevents changes. I suggest checking out some YouTube tutorials on disabling write protection, but be careful! Any interruption while doing the firmware update could mess up the USB stick, which happened to me when I tried formatting mine. My advice? Just keep it as it is - it’s a built-in safeguard for your Windows installation.
If there isn't a physical switch on the USB drive, it's likely either broken or the write protection cannot be disabled. I'd recommend picking up another inexpensive USB drive instead.
Honestly, you’re better off just leaving it alone. Think about it from a tech support viewpoint; keeping the USB key unchanged means it won’t get infected by viruses. You can always stash it away for future use when Windows reaches its end of life.
