Hey everyone! I recently started my career as a System Administrator and I've been learning a lot about Microsoft 365, VMware, and networking over the last nine months. This year, my IT manager has asked each member of our team to come up with individual projects to implement and improve, preferably using open-source solutions. Since I'm fairly new to the field, I would really appreciate any project ideas or suggestions you might have to help me get started!

Consider setting up monitoring tools like Zabbix or Nagios. They’re great for monitoring system health and would be a beneficial skill to have throughout your career.
Thanks for the suggestion! Can you explain what Zabbix or Nagios actually monitors and how it can benefit my organization?
Make sure you're framing your projects around real business needs. Rather than picking a solution first, pinpoint a problem that needs solving, then find a project to address that. This will make your work more relevant and impactful.
Exactly! I did something like this when I moved all our data from spreadsheets to a centralized platform. It made a huge difference.
Do you have an imaging or software deployment system? If not, you might want to explore FOG, which is a free open-source tool. Also, an inventory system like Snipe IT could improve your asset management.
FOG is fantastic!
Thanks! We typically use Intune for software deployment, but I’ll definitely check out FOG.
Since you're already using M365, consider projects involving Power BI or Power Apps. These can automate processes and help tackle business challenges, plus they can enhance your skills in automation.
I’d love to, but I still need to get the hang of automation and understand how Power BI works. Thanks for pointing me in that direction!
Congrats on your new role! Here's a tip: instead of searching for open-source projects, look at your current infrastructure. Identify any pain points or tasks that your coworkers dread—those are your best project ideas. Automating those repetitive tasks could really make a difference.
I totally agree! I've found that the most valuable projects come from solving actual work problems, not personal endeavors. Make sure you really understand the issue before diving into solutions.
Thanks for the insight! I'm trying to get a better grasp on our current setup. I do think impactful projects can get recognition and still be useful after my time here.

Absolutely, becoming proficient in Zabbix could really set you apart. It's a super handy tool!
