I'm a student weighing the pros and cons of joining an upcoming hackathon where I would work on a project using React and a Generative AI SDK. Although I'm excited about the event, I'm conflicted because I have limited experience. Currently, I have basic to intermediate skills in HTML and CSS, and my JavaScript understanding is quite superficial—I'm not even familiar with React or Generative AI yet.
On one hand, I could concentrate on solidifying my JavaScript fundamentals, continue advancing in data structures and algorithms in Java, and then move on to React and the backend later. On the other hand, participating in the hackathon right now might offer valuable practical experience even if I only learn the basics needed to finish a project. My concern is about whether I would be skimming the surface and not truly absorbing the material. I'm looking for opinions from anyone who might have faced a similar situation or has experience in the tech field. Is it worth jumping into the hackathon at my current skill level, or should I hold off until I have a firmer grasp of the fundamentals?
