I'm in a bit of a tech dilemma! My current setup includes an X570 Aorus Elite, an R5 5600 CPU (I had a 5800X that died), 32GB of DDR4 RAM, and an RTX 3070. I also have a spare ASUS B550-E board, another 32GB of DDR4, and a GTX 1080. I'm considering either buying a used 5800X3D for €380 and keeping my current rig for now, which I can use until something better comes along. This way, I can upgrade my gaming machine and move the R5 5600 to a secondary rig for home theater and sim racing.
Or should I sell the B550-E and the extra RAM, and use that money to upgrade to a 9800X3D, a B650 motherboard, and 32GB of DDR5 RAM? This would cost about €900 total, potentially less if I manage to get some of the RAM on clearance. I'm not in dire need of an upgrade, but I've encountered some performance issues in games like Cyberpunk, especially with stutters. I'd still like to play upcoming titles smoothly. My monitor is 3440x1440 at 120Hz, so I want something that won't hold me back in the future. Any advice on whether I should go for the cheaper CPU upgrade or the more expensive full platform upgrade?

You should prioritize a GPU upgrade first. Your 3070 is holding you back more than your CPU would. Right now, there's a lack of really solid GPU options at good value, which is frustrating. But in the long run, you'll want to go for the 9800X3D, especially if you're eventually stepping up to a 5090. So, focus on saving up and then make a more informed decision down the line!
Honestly, if you're still using that 3070, upgrading your CPU right now won't yield much improvement. Your current CPU is doing fine for most games. You might just hold off and save that money for a better GPU later on. Plus, I think the market for components will cool down eventually.
Honestly, none of this makes much sense to me! It feels like there are too many questions here. Just keep what you have for now and see where the market goes. The upgrades will still be there when you're ready.
I totally agree! There isn't a pressing need to upgrade. Your 3070 will be fine with your system as it is. You could save your money for future upgrades, especially when GPUs become more reasonably priced. Right now, I'm in a similar boat, and I'm choosing to wait it out as well. Your combo should work well for the games you mentioned!
Thanks for the reassurance! I guess patience is key right now while prices are all over the place.

Exactly! The GPU is the heart of gaming performance these days. It sounds like waiting for better options might be the best strategy.
