I just bought a new external hard drive that's supposed to be 1TB, but when I check it in Disk Management, it's only showing up as 500GB. The product description mentioned it's partitioned into two 500GB sections, but I can't extend the volume. Does anyone know why it's displaying this way? I need some help figuring this out!

It sounds like there might be a chance that you actually received a 500GB drive instead of the 1TB you paid for. I'd suggest checking your Disk Management screen to confirm how it recognizes the drive. If you can, post a screenshot here. If it's just 500GB, that could indicate you got scammed. If it's practical, you could open the enclosure and check the actual drive, but keep in mind that doing so might void your warranty.
I had a similar issue before! If you suspect the drive might have arrived damaged, it's good that you've already contacted the store. Just be cautious, as these smaller drives being misrepresented isn't as uncommon as you’d think. Do you know if they’ll send you a replacement?
What brand and model is your external hard drive? Sometimes, these small external drives are marketed incorrectly, and you might be dealing with a fake. Let us know where you bought it too, that might help in figuring things out for you.
