Hey everyone! A few years back, I built my own PC and now I'm looking to give it some love with a CPU upgrade. Currently, I'm using a Ryzen 5 3600 and I'm considering either the Ryzen 7 5800X3D or the Ryzen 7 5700X. Here are my specs:
- Motherboard: MSI B450 (MS-7B84)
- 32 GB DDR4 RAM (got lucky with that before the price hikes)
- GPU: Radeon RX 5600 XT
- Ryzen 5 3600 CPU (looking to replace this)
This isn't a high-end competitive setup; I'm a casual gamer with monitors that max out at 60 Hz, so I don't need ultra HD graphics everywhere. Most games run fine, but some newer ones are starting to lag. Given the ridiculous GPU prices right now, I'm focusing on upgrading my CPU instead.
Right now, I'm leaning towards the Ryzen 7 5800X3D or 5700X, but honestly, I've only spent about 6 minutes checking compatibility and prices. Any advice or suggestions? Would really appreciate it!

Make sure to update your BIOS first! You could drop in a Ryzen 5600/X/XT or 5700/X/XT (stay away from the ‘G’ versions) as those would work great for you. Just a heads up, both the 5700X3D and 5800X3D are pretty expensive right now, so it might be better to go for something a bit more wallet-friendly.
You might find that the bottleneck in your gaming experience is more due to your GPU than your CPU. The Ryzen 5 3600 is still pretty solid for 60 FPS gaming. Sure, the 5800X3D is the top AM4 CPU for gaming, but it’s super pricey right now and might not be worth it. The 5700X or even the 5600X would be good options if you can snag them at a decent price. Honestly, I’d suggest checking out GPU upgrades first, as that could make a bigger difference overall.
