Why Does My Ethernet Disconnect While Gaming?

I've been experiencing frequent Ethernet disconnections during online gaming since I switched my Ethernet cables. To troubleshoot, I tested the new cable on my sister's laptop, and it worked fine, so I don't think the cable is the issue. I tried running a constant ping to my router while gaming and noticed disconnects, but when I pinged 8.8.8.8, I didn't get disconnected at all. I really don't know much about technology, but I'm willing to follow instructions. Can anyone help me figure out why this is happening? Also, is it safe to keep playing while pinging 8.8.8.8?

Is your laptop stationary when you're gaming, or does it move around? Sometimes movement can mess with the connection. Just something to keep in mind!

The ping to 8.8.8.8 being stable means your internet likely isn't failing when you disconnect in-game. It might be a coincidence or a fault with the cable or router port. Since you mentioned that the old cable worked without issues, it sounds like the new one might be problematic. Just my two cents!

Running a constant ping while gaming is actually a good idea for testing purposes, but it won’t fix the issue itself. You should also try testing the Ethernet wall socket and the cable; using a tester is usually inexpensive. I had a similar experience where a loose wire was causing issues, so checking for anything like that might help.

Have you thought about just switching back to your old cable if it worked fine? Seems like a simple fix! Sometimes, even new cables can have issues right out of the box. Just a thought!

Quick question: Are your parents playing around with the router settings? Are they potentially disconnecting you for gaming too much? Just throwing that out there as a possible non-tech issue!

When did this start happening? Is it a recent issue? Also, could you share the make and model of your computer, the OS version, and the router you're using? If heavy internet traffic is causing disconnections, it could be related to your Ethernet chipset or even something with your router. Specs can really help us figure this out better!
